🎨 Preparing your canvas: the essentials
🎨 The art of preparing your canvas: essential steps before painting
At Label Toile , we know that the beauty of a work of art depends not only on the artist's talent, but also on the quality and preparation of the canvas. Too often overlooked, this step is crucial for the durability and vibrancy of your creations. Here are our tips for transforming your canvas into a true showcase for your colors.
1. Check the canvas tension
Before you even take out your brushes, make sure the canvas is properly stretched on its frame. A canvas that is too loose can sag and crack over time. A light turn with a key in the corners of the frame will tighten the canvas if necessary.
2. Adapt the support to the technique
- Acrylic : requires a homogeneous, slightly absorbent primer.
- Oil : requires a perfectly insulated and coated canvas to prevent the oils from penetrating and weakening the fibers.
- Mixed techniques : a universal primer remains the best compromise.
Our Label Toile canvases are already prepared to offer you an optimal surface, but a very light sanding can further improve the result.
3. The importance of the fund
Working on a white canvas is not mandatory. Many artists prefer to apply a colored background (grey, ochre, sienna, etc.) to immediately give their painting an atmosphere and better balance the contrasts.
4. Protect your canvas
A final varnish applied a few months after the artwork has dried protects the pigments, intensifies the colors, and makes maintenance easier. At Label Toile, we recommend a varnish suited to your medium, matte or glossy depending on the desired effect.
✨ Why is this preparation essential?
Because it guarantees you:
- A longer lifespan for your artworks
- Color stability over time
- A pleasant surface that respects your artistic gesture
In short, preparing your canvas is already entering the creative process.
